The Low-Fi Lab Mix - October 2010

Today's post is a mix of stuff from live shows & recordings that will be spotlighted down the road . . . for now, here's a sample of things to come . . .

We got some more live music from old cassettes.

Let's do a 180 degree shift from the last post & hear some Bluegrass music from Saddle River from back in 2005. This is from a show at The Landing Oyster Bar in Tyne Valley & was recorded on our friend's mini-disc recorder (thanks Pat D. - see mini-disc to the right). The first tune is Saddle's arrangement of a traditional instrumental called 'Old Joe Clark' that we play to warm up. You can't much hear me & Catherine on guitars but I'm yelling encouragement throughout & make up for not yet having a bass player by stomping loudly all through the song. Troy & James are up front & are playing some pretty hot breaks, whew!

Now a recording from the Saddle River String Band (James, Troy, Tom & Mike) from the past 2010 summer for Eddie Quinn's Close to the Ground Concert Series at the Kaylee Hall. Saddle's been playing these shows for five years & it occured to me this year that I should try to capture a night with the IC Recorder. I went into the audience, found a ledge with an outlet nearby, plugged it in, pressed record & walked away & retrieved it after the set . . . & no one stole it! Tom DesRoches has written one song so far in is life & it's a pretty darn good one called 'Ain't Done Dyin'.'

Aint' Done Dyin' (Tom DesRoches-Saddle River SB)

Ain't done dyin' yet, ain't done dyin' yet
Seeds to be sown, plans I got goin'
I ain't done dyin' yet
She got honey in the can, she got honey in the can
She got honey, spending all my money
I eat it up as fast as she can tell me I can
Chorus
Come on Cecil give me a nickel, come on buddy throw me three
I'm in a halfway house down a dead-end road
Got an itch that's been getting the better of me
Chorus
Given up my love for a woman, such a fool 'cause I do
Start to believe, wear my heart on my sleeve
Ya take it, fake it, forsake & shake & break it in two
Chorus

Richard DesRoches is a musician & filmmaker from Summerside & is about to release his independently made movie 'The Search for Blind Potato Jimmy Jackson' about a mythical S'side bluesman who seems to have influenced everyone in town . . . so why can't they find any of his records? Tonnes of local folk will be in the flick including Tom DesRoches, Neil Wiley (who co-produced it), Troy McArthur, Dave MacDonald, Nathan Wiley, Ryan Hutchinson, Steve Arsenault, Shane Sauve, Rob Gallant, Jimmy Stright & many others making cameo appearances. I got an early sneak peek & it's fugging hilarious. If there's a public showing I will let folks know.
Me & Rich & Neil recorded some tunes for the soundtrack & here's one of us rehearsing Rich's original, 'Billy Bob.'

Billy Bob (Richard DesRoches)

Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
It's the one with the big, high wheels
I love the way that it looks, I love the way that it sounds
I'd like to sure & take her & plow her all around the back field
Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
I'll say it again, Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
It's the one painted John Deere green
I love the way that it looks, I love the way that it sounds
& you should see her when she turns on her high beams
Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor

Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
It's the one with the big, tall wheels
I like the way that she looks, I love the way that she sounds
I'd love to sure & take her & plow her all around the back field
Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
With her three-point hitch & her five-speed transmission
The time I've spent with her oughta raise up some suspicion
Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
I'll say it again, Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor

Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor
I'll say it again, Billy Bob, I'm sure in love with your tractor

We'll leave you with a tune I wrote in the mid-1990s called 'Out In the Stable.' I had a very disturbing & surreal dream at the time involving a whole lot of loaded imagery taking place on my buddy's family's farm. It made for a song anyway. This is definitely a Neil Young 'After The Goldrush' era-influenced tune, the kind of stuff I was writing after playing punk & metal for several years.

In 1997 I was not at all set up to record on any kind of quality equipment so I learned to improvise with what I had. I would record myself playing guitar & singing. Then, I would take that tape & play it on a stereo. As that tape played I would record myself singing back-up vocals & playing lead guitar licks to the first recording. This is some low-fi stuff. But this home-made, 2-track recording technique allowed me to flesh out original songs on the cheap.
